“Contract killer” is a fitting job for a vampire, and it suits Liam just fine. Cast down from the wealth and status of the Sky for taking a human lover, Liam lurks in the poor and pollution-choked Gutter, killing to survive. Between his natural strengths and his Cybernetix mods, no mark has ever escaped him.

Liam’s ex-lover Daniel is the heir to Cybernetix—and its greatest threat. Horrified by people less man than machine and the exploitation of Gutter factory workers, he’d rather destroy Cybernetix than inherit it . . . if his father doesn’t destroy him first.

Years of anger and a heap of mods have kept Daniel and Liam apart. When Liam is hired to slaughter a man in his glass Sky tower, he walks right into a Daniel-shaped trap. Daniel’s father has betrayed them both, and only by working together can Daniel and Liam survive the coming day. They have no reason to trust each other, but as the dawn looms, a bargain that began with the simple urge to live soon reminds them of the love they once shared. Can they find each other again, or will the Cybernetix assassins find them first?

Review:

“A Chip in His Shoulder” is flippin fabulous. Contract killer vampire hunts to kill his former lover who done him wrong in a sci-fi thriller that will have you turning pages as quickly as your E-reader allows. WOW, what a read!

This story is set in a divided dystopian and privileged world where those “with” live above ground in elite Sky and those “without” are cast below into the abysmal horrors of Gutter. Hired assassin Liam is contracted to kill Daniel, his ex-lover, by Daniel’s father who is the head of the empyrean conglomerate Cybernetix.

For years Daniel has worked to get the goods on his father and to destroy that company, which produces mods. Mods and bio-mods enhance aspects of human performance, but Daniel and his group see them as dehumanizing and dangerous. A disagreement over Liam’s use of mods was at the core of what happened to drive the men apart.

Liam, who comes from a privileged family of vampires who routinely embraced the use of mods, has learned to use and depend on more highly sophisticated mods to stay alive as a hired assassin. Cut away from family living in Sky and disinherited, life in Gutter has hardened Liam, but he endures.

Daniel, once an entitled son, is forging a life as an anti-mod terrorist and is under house arrest. As the two former lovers come face to face, Daniel learns he has been set up by Daniel’s father and the two men are forced to trust one another to survive. The conflict begins here. Can Liam set aside his bitterness for taking a human lover, which got him cast into the Gutter? Can Daniel forgive himself for doing nothing to help Liam and trust a man paid to kill him? Can Daniel and Liam forge as alliance to bring down Sky?

L.A. Witt has created an amazing universe, teaming with despair for one half of society. The other half holds staggering wealth and power that is being used to keep the Gutter People subjugated. This is a harsh world with no grays. It is life and death for Liam and Daniel at every turn and the breakneck pace of the action-packed story will leave you breathless. The chemistry between the main characters is audacious and you will believe every twist and turn as their buried feelings resurface; hard choices must be made and trust rebuilt while the rebirth of love hovers within their grasp.

Clever L.A. Witt has combined the vampire genre with sci-fi and does it ever work. The writing is crisp, the description vivid, the tension palpable and the romance smoldering. I was so engaged by the story, the main characters and the writing; I read the novella in one sitting. I loved this book.
