Fresh from backwoods Minnesota, actuarial student Ben Dutoit is ecstatic to land a job with Sydney Sutherland Family Insurance, one of the few companies that offers life insurance to people in the high-risk category. The fact that he gets to work in Gay Central, aka San Francisco, is just the icing on the rainbow-colored cake. Ben sets himself just three goals: be out and proud enough to participate in the Pride parade; seek out the company of like-minded souls in the clubs; and maybe, if he’s lucky, fall in love. But the men Ben meets are everything he’s not: suave, confident, sophisticated, and sexy. Unlike redneck Ben, they’re blue bloods from blue states, born with status, wealth, and the responsibility that comes with the package. Ben’s still wondering if red and blue can mix when he discovers what risk really means. The global economy tanks. The job he looked forward to is in jeopardy, and every dream Ben ever had is threatened, especially love, the biggest dream of all.

Review:

This book is basically broken down into three parts so that’s how I’m going to review it. The blurb does a great job of setting up Part Red but the rest of story was a complete surprise to me.

Part Red is told from Ben’s POV. He’s likes his job and his boss. He’s sleeping with a sexy guy who works for his company. Life is pretty good for Ben until he starts to get feelings for his boss, Adrian. Problem is the gorgeous older man is often in the paper or at social events with women so he’s obviously straight, right? Oh, and he’s his boss. The company gym becomes the location where they build a friendship. He takes it upon himself to help get Adrian in shape which pretty much just feeds his desire for him. For Ben the frustration is worth it if he gets to spend a little more time with Adrian. 5 stars

Part Blue is told from Adrian’s POV. Adrian made a deal with his father if he suppresses his “homosexual tendencies” and runs the company his father won’t cancel the high risk policies his firm is known for. It’s something he believes in so strongly he lives a lie for it. He does a pretty good job until his father sends a replacement executive, who his father also hopes to become his wife. When she sets her claws on Ben’s job he gets protective of his employee. He starts to notice more and more things he likes about Ben. Watching Ben with his boyfriend Jason makes him yearn for that kind of relationship with Ben but he’s taken already. He’s also sworn to a life alone unless he gives in to marry a woman which he will never do. He just has to hold on until he can take over the company. So he spends his nights drinking and watching porn lonely and grieving for the life he left behind. Once he gets to know Ben he stars to fantasize a life of what could be. 4 stars

Part Red + Blue is both men admitting how they feel and working through all the obstacles in their way. There are a ton so be prepared for some angst between the really hot sex scenes. This part seemed to drag on after the trip to the woods. There were also some unrealistic moments that felt like they were just thrown in to create some extra conflict that wasn’t needed. Just too long, slow and angst driven compared to the first two parts. 3 stars

Overall I like the story. I liked the two POVs because I felt like I got to know the MCs well and it’s always interesting to see how different people see situations. Laurel was so unlikable, another heinous, over the top woman as the baddie. I thought the story had a lot of depth and layers. I wanted Ben and Adrian together so badly so I’d say this was very successful in the romance department. The sex scenes were really hot! Adding all the parts together gives us a solid 4 stars. I liked it.
