Private detective Duncan Andrews’s best friend Gina is a witch. His dog is a zombie. And his dead boyfriend, Robbie, is a ghost. So it’s hardly any wonder that he uses his connection to the supernatural to help him solve cases. Good thing, too, because Duncan has his hands full. Janice Sanderson, the richest woman in Indianapolis, wants him to find her stripper daughter, Brenda, and another client is having some trouble with a specter haunting her family home. On top of that, Duncan has decided to add dating into the mix, though after Robbie’s death, he’s not sure he’s ready.
When Duncan meets Nick while tracking down a lead on Brenda’s boyfriend, he shelves his doubts and agrees to a date. Robbie doesn’t make it easy on him, showing up to spoil his chances, but that is the least of Duncan’s worries—because one of his clients’ husbands is missing and there’s a serial killer on the loose—one Duncan fears isn’t human.
Review:
I’m very glad I came across this series. I’ll admit I’m not usually a fan of human and ghost romances but this one was awesome. This story was a murder mystery with a nod to jack the ripper and all his bloody horror. The book is set in a modern day world where the supernatural live among humans. Who, for the most part, have no clue they’re there. Private Detective Duncan Andrews can see them or is open to the possibilities of them. He can sense when the supes are near or anything other worldly happens. His ex-boyfriend’s ghost is still around. They still love each other. Robbie died too young and doesn’t want to leave Duncan.
Robbie sticking around has left Duncan stagnant in the relationship department. He loves Robbie but they can’t physically be together. Duncan meets Nick in a bar one night and Nick asks him out. Duncan likes him and he feels like maybe it’s time to find a living boyfriend. There were lots of conflicting emotions involved in this decision. This part hurt my heart. I know how much Duncan needed the physical contact of a real man but mixed in there is the guilt and love for Robbie. Nick is a nice guy but I fell in love with Robbie. But again he’s a ghost! There were some amazing light kisses between Robbie and Duncan that made me melt.
Duncan’s newest job gets him mixed up in the murders of local strippers. He’s sent to find and then protect the daughter of his new client. It gets him mixed up in the murders of local strippers. Besides the grotesque nature of the murders there’s something very strange about the killer. Duncan can sense it. When he comes in contact with him he knows for sure.
So many of the outrageously fun things are mentioned in the blurb. Gina his witch friend was great. A strong and funny woman who is always there for Duncan. The human secondary characters were fun and complex. This book was funny, bloody, suspenseful, and a really good love story. The love story is left open for future books which I didn’t mind because I can’t imagine it being tied up neatly. Damn but I want Robbie to come back to life some how! Nick was great but he just didn’t do it for me like Robbie did. Maybe the next book will warm me up to Nick? I will absolutely be reading it.

I love this series. Robbie is such a sweetheart and I feel for Duncan. The second book, Animal Instinct is even better.

I am a fan of human and ghost romances, so I was already sold before I read the review. Still great to know it was enjoyable for a non-fan. Thanks for the review, and thanks to Syd for the thumbs(and heads)-up on the second one!
