Kit Jefferies, a part-time department store Christmas elf, is an artist who loves life and his family. Unfortunately, his car dies at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere as he is heading home for Christmas. Enter Nick St. George.

Nick is a very unhappy man—he’s achieved his professional goals only to find the rest of his life bleak and empty. Deciding there was only one way to make everything right, he is on his way to San Francisco on a dark mission, and even the horrible sleet storm that blocked his path won’t deter him. That’s when he found Kit.

At first, Nick is pretty sure rescuing Kit was a big mistake. Kit’s personality is just too, well, effervescent. But as the miles go by, Kit begins to bring light to his dark heart. It might even be bright enough to illuminate a Christmas miracle.

This is a story from the Dreamspinner Press 2013 Advent Calendar package“Heartwarming”.

Review :

I just love the holidays, so many lovely books. Some are humorous, some are sweet, some are sad and I find that most leave me feeling happy and hopeful. Grumble Monkey and the Department Store Elf is all of these things.

Nick St George is bitter. He sees his life as a series of disappointments. His family has disinherited him, his partner left him and even though he has attained the financial wealth he sought to achieve, his personal life is lonely and filled with regret. Nick sets out for San Francisco, his goal is to be there for Christmas. Try as he might, the weather seems to be against him. After a harrowing drive in the sleet and iced over roads, he decides to stop at a rest area. There he meets Kit Jefferies, a young college student trying to get home for Christmas. Kit’s old car has broken down at the rest stop and he is unable to reach his family. When Nick reluctantly agrees to give him a ride to his home in Terra’s Gate, he is elated. Nick on the other hand cannot believe he is doing this. Kit is the epitome of what Nick detests in gay men. Kit is out and proud. He is wearing a silly elf hat, has rhinestones on his jeans and even the dreaded gay pride sticker on his car. Nick is the Ebenezer of gay men. Bah, who needs gay pride parades, why should it be anyone’s business what I do.

Kit exudes optimism. During their trip he tries to get to know Nick. Nick is grumpy, snappish and a self proclaimed selfish man. Kit calls him a grumble monkey. But when they see a truck driver in distress he pulls over and watches as Kit takes charge. Bit by bit you can see Nick warming up to Kit and he hates it. He has things to do, places to be and does not intend to spend any more time than necessary with someone like Kit, whose big family is loving and accepting and so unlike Nick’s own family. There are times when I am so annoyed at Nick’s behavior that I felt like the grumble monkey, but at the same time I felt sorry for the way his life has turned out. Kit is a wonderful character. He is filled with joy and a delightful innocence. His stories about his family and the grumble monkey are lovely and his positive attitude is contagious.

B.G. Thomas takes us on this wonderful journey with two men whose lives are so very different but really have more in common than they realize. This story is very touching and the emotions it invoked ranged from laughter to tears. It is so worth the journey to see where these two men end up. When I finished this book, I had a teary smile and a heart full of Christmas cheer. Highly recommended.
