Twenty-two-year-old Alessandro Silva knows that returning to tiny Perch Creek to help his foster mother was the right thing to do. With no degree and a delinquent’s reputation, he’s lucky to have landed a job waiting tables. But not everyone is happy he’s back, and the only thing keeping his move home from being a total bust is his boss’s hot brother.
Jaime Winters spent most of his life watching the world go by, first from a series of hospitals and then from behind big stacks of textbooks. Studying is easier than facing the fact that years of heart failure means he’s still a virgin at twenty-three. Until the new waiter in his sister’s diner awakens desires he’d long ago given up on.
The last thing Alessandro wants is to fall for someone as fragile as Jaime. And Jaime may have a new heart, but he’s scared of what giving it to another person would mean. Their no-strings-attached, instructional approach to sex keeps emotion safely at bay, until a secret from Alessandro’s past forces them to confront their feelings in the present…
I really liked this book. I liked the premise of a gay young Latino comes back to town after making his way out of it, to help his foster mom. He comes back knowing he’s putting himself right back into the critical eye of a small town he escaped once. Alessandro’s not only not white, he’s a foster kid with a troubled past. Oh, and he’s gay and barely made it out of high school. With no real prospects he heads down main street looking for work. Alessandro happens upon a help needed sign. He passes the hands on interview of the breakfast place’s owner, Shannon, and gets the job.
He’s finishing up his first shift when Shannon’s brother Jaime walks in. Jaime has been sick his entire life. He finally got a new heart a few years back but he kind of fell back into only focusing on his academic aspirations he’d dreamed of for so long. He’s a virgin and gay at 23. So he has no idea what to do when the gorgeous new stranger in town starts hitting on him. The two dance around the issue at first but soon agree they’d like to let things get more physical. Sort of make Alessandro be his tutor in all things sexual.
This part of the book was extremely sexy. Jaime was so innocent but willing and excited to experience things with Alessandro. Alessandro of course loved this idea. Both men agreed to keep it simple and no strings attached but neither could keep that promise. They fell in love. Jaime’s inexperience with men and relationships left him feeling that maybe a guy like Alessandro wouldn’t want to settle down with a guy like him. One with a heart condition. Alessandro doesn’t think he’ll ever be good enough for Jaime but neither man wants to let go of what they’ve found with each other until they have to.
I think this part of the book was beautiful, intense and sexy. A really good love story with hot meaningful sex. Both characters grew throughout the book. The town bully and his impact on everyone added a lot of tension. It was all believable until the end when things became a little outrageous but I was so happy with the rest of the book I just rolled with it. I think this is definitely one to check out if you like a coming of age story. These guys are of age but it definitely had that vibe. I’d recommend checking this one out.
