Hell & High Water : Blog Tour

Hello everyone! Welcome to the final stop on the Hell & High Water Blog Tour, though it’s by no means the last day of celebration. Thank you to Live Your Life Buy the Book for hosting me, and thank you all for joining me on the tour. Today I’m chatting about the different Therian classifications along with some fun facts about Destructive Delta’s animal forms.

Earlier in the tour I talked a little about how Therians came about and how Human society reacted to this new species. One of the laws enforced with the birth of Therians was Therian registration. All Therians must be registered at their nearest CDC Therian registration office where they’ll be marked by classification for the safety of both Therian and Human citizens. What does this mark entail? Three letters tattooed on the left side of their necks, making it illegal for Humans to get tattoos in that spot. The three letters specify: Family, Genus, and Species. For example, here are the tattoos you’ll find on the necks of our Destructive Delta agents.

Destructive Delta classifications

Just what do those letters mean? For Sloane, the “F” says his Therian form is of the Felid Family, the “P” for his Genus Panthera, and the “J” for his species Jaguar. Ash and Hobbs are also Felid Panthera with Ash being a Lion and Hobbs being a Tiger. Cael’s mark is somewhat different. Although he’s still a Felid, his Genus is Acinonyx and his species is Cheetah.

Obviously not all Therians reacted kindly to this law back when it was introduced in 1987, and it continues to be a topic of controversy in the THIRDS world. Many Therians chose and still choose to remain unregistered. Another job of the THIRDS is to deal with unregistered Therians. Anyone who’s caught has a week to register and get marked, or a warrant for their arrest will be issued. There are also unregistered Therians who prefer to remain in their Therian form, hiding out in dangerous sections of New York City such as Greenpoint in Brooklyn. There Therians hide in the shadows of what was once a thriving community. Now it’s in ruins, the buildings and streets dilapidated with Humans staying far away. The number of Therians in there is undisclosed, and due to the danger just stepping foot in there entails, the THIRDS don’t enter unless they have cause to.

The longer a Therian remains in his Therian form, the harder it is to hold onto their Humanity. Of course for Human consciousness to be neurologically present, a Therian must have one to begin with. The more psychotic a criminal, the more feral he or she is in their Therian form. Here are some fun facts I came across during research which I incorporated into the Therian side of the Destructive Delta agents.

Jaguar: is the third largest of the big cats. It has particularly powerful jaws, using its fangs to pierce its prey’s skull. They have twice the biting strength of a lion. They’re good swimmers, adept at climbing, and their claws are retractable. They use their strength and cunning to overcome other animals. Spots are still visible on black jaguars if you look closely. Their roar sounds like a hoarse repetitive cough.

Cheetah: can hit 60 to 65 mph in five seconds but can only run in short bursts. They can see long distances, have enlarged hearts and lungs, and are the least able to adapt to new environments. They’re one of the few Felids with semi-retractable claws, can’t roar, and communicates via “chirping”. They hunt by vision rather than scent. As they’re not powerful enough to break the necks of large prey, they kill prey by tripping it during a chase.

Tiger: are the largest of the big cats, great swimmers, can hunt alone or cooperatively. Their roar can be heard up to five miles. They can take down prey much larger than themselves. No two tigers have exactly the same pattern of stripes. They have retractable claws, hunt at night, and rely heavily on their canine teeth for survival. Tigers purr only on exhale. Male tigers are more intolerant of other males within their territory than female tigers.

Lion: very territorial and defensive of his or her pride. Their roar can be heard up to five miles, have retractable claws, and are the second largest of the big cats. They’re also the more social of the big cats (Ash must have skipped that particular gene–or so he’d like to make us think). Lions hunt together, and are more active at night as they have great night vision. They use their tail for communication, as well as head rubbing or nuzzling.

Well I hope you’ve enjoyed the tour and learning all about the THIRDS world. I’m having such a fun time working on this series. I hope you’ll fall in love with these fellas as much as I have. Happy reading!

Action. Comedy. Romance. And that one weird guy.

When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.

Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.
