1907, twenty years into the zombie Plague

Reuben is a baker living in the slums of London, sharing a room with his father and an extended family of cockroaches. Poor, uneducated, and repressing all his sexual desires, he leads a life of misery, only sometimes sprinkled with gin and a rough tumble in a filthy back alley.

But when he is abducted into Bylondon to be the slave of a wealthy crime family member named Erik Dal, his values are put to the test. His new master is obsessed with all things equestrian, and Reuben soon learns that if he obeys and performs well as Erik’s horse, he might just get everything he yearns for: pampering, foods he never even dreamed of, and shameless sex with a demonically handsome young man in leather riding boots.

As Copper, Erik’s treasured dun stallion, Reuben must submit to his new master’s obscene fancy of possessing another man completely. That is, if he yearns for treats and not the lick of a riding crop. Fake tails, harnesses, and a new haircut to his ginger mane help Reuben transform into Copper, but the fear of losing his dignity in the eyes of society might just prove to be a bigger restraint than any bit, bridle, or handcuffs.

All that for the small price of his freedom. Though at times, Reuben feels it’s his soul that Erik is after instead.

(…)the carriage stopped in front of an elegant looking mansion with massive marble statues of horses on either side of the doors. They were imposing, almost intimidating, carved of black as if they could be the mounts of the riders of the Apocalypse.

Imagine yourself as a very wealthy and powerful man of unusual carnal taste. The world you live in is one without Internet to connect with potential partners, with little objective knowledge of sexuality itself. Now imagine such a world drowned in chaos, lawless. Would you just take what you want, regardless of the consequences?

Some people are bound by morality, others succumb to temptation when there’s no policing of unacceptable behavior. But Erik, from our novel The Copper Horse: Fear, is a different kind of man, a hedonist who is intent on indulging himself by reaching out for the forbidden. He wants a human stallion? He’ll get one.

With his family holding Bylondon with an iron hand, and with access to great wealth, Erik is able to shape his house into a playground for his fantasies. It started with little touches. The house was decorated with large and small paintings and sculptures that almost exclusively depict equines, be it solo, interacting with each other, or with humans. His vision became bolder with time, and now he has a statue of a stallion mounting another male horse in the office he uses for official business. And, of course, no one dares to question his – rather questionable – choice in decor.

Reuben turned his head to take a look at the paintings that hung on the wall to their side, and his face inevitably became hot at the sight of a beautiful youngster being overpowered by a half-man, half-equine monster, his clothes in rags. It seemed even Erik’s taste in art was far from moral, and with things like this adorning the most public space of his home, he had to be proud of his perversions.

Erik then took it all a step further and wrote an erotic book about himself and an angel fallen from the sky who was then turned into a human horse, but at some point, fantasizing is no longer enough. Since there are no men falling from the sky into his arms, no one begging in the street to be transformed into a stallion, ruthless as he is, Erik snatches a man for himself.

Bare as the day he was born, Erik looked happier now than when in his luxurious attire, innocent almost. He lowered his eyelids with a soft sigh. “It’s about an angel named Pegasus and a sinner who wants to make him his.”

“Let me guess, the sinner’s name is Erik?” Reuben couldn’t stop admiring him. There was something otherworldly about him, despite the blue dirt under his fingernails, or the scars. And the cruelty.

Erik snorted. “It had to be.”

As Erik’s obsession grew, he dedicated several places in his newly built home to his passions. In the basement, he keeps carts, wagons, carriages, and other vehicles, some meant to be pulled by real equines, some adjusted to the size of men. He also keeps his men, one at a time, in a special room with wooden floors and piles of fresh hay. The stable is his personal playground, but also the pony’s home and personal SPA. With Erik not having enough time to spend whole days with his pet, there is a special servant in the household whose sole purpose is to take care of its needs. The groom prepares baths and operates the pony’s steam room. He takes care of the nails (aka hooves), shaves and cleans the pony, prepares it for special occasions, and trains with it on a daily basis. Of course, Erik would love to do that himself, but there is no helping his workload, and there is no time off for welcoming the new horse into the family.

One thing that needs to be said is that Erik isn’t into warm-bloods. He enjoys large, muscular stallions with lots of stamina and a mild temperament. And finding such a gem is more difficult than recruiting the right servants. Even after finding the right specimen, building its muscle is key so that it can be used for riding and carting. Being the reasonable man he is, Erik keeps his body weight on the low side so that he can ride his ponyboys without breaking their backs. So considerate!

To feed his fantasies, Erik fills his home with hand-crafted tack, all especially made to fit a human. There are bridles, bits, longe lines, riding crops, and even saddles. Kat (the other half of K.A. Merikan) and I really enjoyed creating the various accessories, furniture, and play ideas for Erik’s stable. It was fun to use typical elements of both BDSM and pet play, but for us, bending the rules to achieve the effect we want is most satisfying.

The Copper Horse: Fear is focused on Erik’s mansion and what happens in the house, so even though the first book just came out, we can’t wait for the second book in the trilogy. The Copper Horse: Pride will introduce many new toys, tack, and pony-play scenarios that happen outside the house when Copper the pony interacts with the public, other masters, human pet owners, and one very horny stud stallion.
